Dogspotting 6

 The summer has been coming to an end and though I haven't seen too any dogs on my travels, these 3 are memorable.  


Pippa is a lively sweet mixed breed who I met in one of my favourite haunts.  She was so lively that I could only get an 'in action' shot!  Her young owner told us of her story, a rescue from one of the southern states, and that she is now a therapy dog!   She has the softest fur and almost fox like in demeanour.

This very sweet and wise senior lab cross girl comes to greet birders when they visit this popular hotspot.  She lives in the house across the way and she is very well looked after, but she is free to enjoy the lake and visit people in her friendly manner.  After we had a nice greeting, she followed me along the shoals and went for a swim!



Max is a very handsome mastiff mix who is his person's loyal companion.  His story is sad, but has a happy ending.  He was physically abused and neglected for the first 2 years of his life and was 40 lbs lighter.  He got lucky and was adopted by a nice man who saw his potential.  He appreciated our meeting and understood the importance of exposing dogs to new people.  I had seen the duo before from a distance but this is the first time face to face.  He is one of the most handsome dogs that I have photographed and his manners are impeccable!!

Always a wonderful surprise!

 This morning was a cold, windy very overcast morning in Sarnia.  I was torn on where to go on my before work expedition.  The light was poor for photography and I didn't fancy a long trek with this NW wind.  Blackwell Trails (or Twin Lake Park) was where my trusty Honda pointed to.  I was hoping to see a Common Loon Gavia immer as I ran into a lovely couple one day and they said that a pair always show up here in April.  No Loon, but as I was walking this fairly short trail my Merlin app picked up Yellow Rumped Warbler Setophaga coronata.  I noticed some movement in the brush and thought that I would never be able to see let alone photograph this pretty bird.  The YRWA gave me some good views and I was able to get some half decent photographs!  I was over the moon.  These early migrants have been back in town for a couple of weeks now, and I have heard them, but this was the first time I was able to get a good honest look and some photo...

Winter Solstice 2025 Trip to Lambton Shores

 This year it has seemed like winter came early. We have had our share of snow and freezing rain and extreme wind chills!  Today it was -7 with a windchill of -14 with NW winds of 22/31 when my new friend Ronny and I set out for Lambton Shores.  I run into Ronny the Rooster occasionally in the field and I mentioned at one time that I was interested in the Pine Grosbeaks that have been sighted, but that I hadn't been able to get a photo of.  He had never seen one before and he was keen on accompanying me.   I have seen the PIGR twice this year, the conditions were not right and I was not fast enough for a photo.  It is an irruption year for winter finches, Pine Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills, White Winged Crossbills, Pine Siskin, Evening Grosbeak, Bohemian Waxwings and earlier the Red Breasted Nuthatches moved south quite a bit. October Big Day 2025: Lambton County

This year I thought I'd attempt a Big Day!  This is where you bird from dawn to dusk on a specific day, ebird set it as October 11 this year.  I was going to go south to Pelee, as I hadn't birded that area since May, but considering the checklists and the fact that we have good birds here in Lambton, I thought I'd bird my home county. I mentioned it to my friend Deryl Nethercott as he is the expert on birding Lambton, especially Canatara Park.  He gave me some great tips and almost a heart attack as he jumped out of a bush in the dark as I was walking around Lake Chipigan!  He says, "Eva!  I'm gonna help you!"  After I recovered and my heart slowed down, I showed my appreciation and we settled in for a 2 hour walk around the park.   The weather was a bit brisk, not as cold as it had been at 8C and overcast.  The first bird that I heard was the Rooster at the Animal farm!  Then the Hermit Thrush and soon many many White Throated Sparrows!...
