Huron Fringe Birding Festival Part 2 Birder Murder Mystery Tour

 I knew that I wanted to do Paul's walk, but wasn't sure if I wanted to tour around on my own or join an event.  The Birder Murder Mystery Tour appealed to me, because, as you know I'm a pretty die hard birder with really no time for fun!  This looked like fun, and when I got to the registration tent Saturday morning I asked if their were spaces and if I could sign up.  I could and I did!  It was a good decision, cause I had a blast!

Marshall brought us to his and his wife's Wanda's estate close to Tiverton to solve several mysteries!  None of us where really sure what was going on, but as he showed us around his property we happened on various 'clues' to solve mysteries.  I will not divulge details of the clues, as they are pretty clever and insightful, but let me just say there was alot of learning going on! 

Marshall has several tree swallow boxes on his property, he opened up and showed us this one with 6 eggs.

A couple of hours later we had learned how to prevent window strikes, what Great Crested Flycatcher's use in their nests, what are the 4 most common birds, how to identify a dead bird by their feathers, what disease causes death with little to no symptoms or signs, and what Marshall feeds his piranhas in his pond!  

This fun frolic was set on beautiful Marwanda Estate, a 28 acre property with 2 ponds with fountains, trails and a pine forest.  Marshall has built all of the structures on the property as well as dug the ponds!

Marshall is an avid life long naturalist and birder and has led many tours during the Festival over the years.  He is doing a 'Big Sit' at his property during the Festival, that would be awesome!

Winter Solstice 2025 Trip to Lambton Shores

 This year it has seemed like winter came early. We have had our share of snow and freezing rain and extreme wind chills!  Today it was -7 with a windchill of -14 with NW winds of 22/31 when my new friend Ronny and I set out for Lambton Shores.  I run into Ronny the Rooster occasionally in the field and I mentioned at one time that I was interested in the Pine Grosbeaks that have been sighted, but that I hadn't been able to get a photo of.  He had never seen one before and he was keen on accompanying me.   I have seen the PIGR twice this year, the conditions were not right and I was not fast enough for a photo.  It is an irruption year for winter finches, Pine Grosbeaks, Red Crossbills, White Winged Crossbills, Pine Siskin, Evening Grosbeak, Bohemian Waxwings and earlier the Red Breasted Nuthatches moved south quite a bit. October Big Day 2025: Lambton County

This year I thought I'd attempt a Big Day!  This is where you bird from dawn to dusk on a specific day, ebird set it as October 11 this year.  I was going to go south to Pelee, as I hadn't birded that area since May, but considering the checklists and the fact that we have good birds here in Lambton, I thought I'd bird my home county. I mentioned it to my friend Deryl Nethercott as he is the expert on birding Lambton, especially Canatara Park.  He gave me some great tips and almost a heart attack as he jumped out of a bush in the dark as I was walking around Lake Chipigan!  He says, "Eva!  I'm gonna help you!"  After I recovered and my heart slowed down, I showed my appreciation and we settled in for a 2 hour walk around the park.   The weather was a bit brisk, not as cold as it had been at 8C and overcast.  The first bird that I heard was the Rooster at the Animal farm!  Then the Hermit Thrush and soon many many White Throated Sparrows!...

OFO Oct. 4, 2025 trip to Rondeau, Eireau, Keith McLean Conservation lands and Blenheim Sewage Lagoons

 Saturday, Oct 4 was a gorgeous, sunny but hot early autumn day at Rondeau PP.  Our fearless leader Peter Sproule led me and 12 other OFO members on a trip around Rondeau.  We started at the visitor centre and walked the beach.  Our first bird of the day was a gorgeous Peregrine Falcon, followed by a Cooper's hawk and Merlin!  Raptor morning!  There were many gulls out on the sandbars, Ring billed and Herring Gulls.  We were pleased to see a juvenile Red headed woodpecker perching high up on a dead tree.   The beach was gorgeous, the water still and placid, and I was surprised to see White Tailed Deer tracks leading into the water, maybe they went for a swim, or  a drink!  It was getting warm at 15 C already and we knew we were in for another unseasonably hot day.  With enough water and sunscreen to get us through, we headed back into the bush where Peter led us on South Point E trail, apparently one of the best birding trails ...
